BUDDING GROVE
Figment Sculpture Garden, NYC, 2011
The design concept for this piece is that of a forest, to which people may flock and which they may wander around and explore. In the imaginary scene, the chairs are trees and the trellis a tree crown. This temporary installation is infrastructural in nature; it allows for activities, perhaps suggests them, perhaps only inspires people to suggest them, rather than outlining a clear pattern of observation, occupation and interaction. The practice of exploring is the intent. This is a common childhood activity, as I see it – cutting the path to an adventure in a slightly unusual environment. The tall chair-trees come together to form a labyrinth to explore, with different clearings that foster more static individual or group activities.
