FOOD COURT HOUSE
RAIC Justice Architecture Competition Entry, 2006
Project credits: Benjamin Alexander
The RAIC Justice Architecture competition called for a conceptual re-imagining of the provincial courthouse in a small Canadian town. In this age, when we relegate the important public institution of the postal office to a counter in the back of a 7/11, we decided to explore the incorporation of the courthouse into a the quintessential building of the small town main street - strip mall. The proposed building is organized in an ascending spiral, with the level of security and propriety gradually increasing as one winds up from a mall food court, through the more public courthouse programmes such as Legal Aid and police station, through the courtrooms, to the upper level holding cells.
