LOON LAKE CABIN
UBC Research Forest, Maple Ridge, 2006
Project credits: Oliver Neumann, Carl-Julius Claussen
This project called for an 8-room cabin as temporary accomodation for the UBC Research Forest. Furthermore, the design was to be developed around a specific material, Hundegger Solid-Wood-Wall - heavy wood composite panels made from engineered-beam off-cuts. The site for the project, a small plateau at the camp, already featured four old cabins, slated to be removed. Beginning with the form of the typical cabin on site, the dimensional and constructional limitations of the Solid-Wood-Wall product and a rather conventional approach to programming (somewhat necessary due to spatial constraints on site), the design methodology for this project is a simple play in creating opening in the envelope. A matrix of design moves to penetrate the mass of envelope was evaluated in terms of daylighting, privacy and lake views (the client's major concern in the project).
