PREFAB HOUSE :: FAB
20/20 Prefab Competition, Vancouver, 2009
In a 400-sf dwelling, the three domestic programmes which have clearly defined spatial requirements (sleeping, cooking and bathing) determine most of the available space, leaving little, if any for the fourth, less-clearly defined programme - living itself. A typical solution to this might be a pairing of functions (such as kitchen and bath, bed and futon) into a highly efficient core. In drawing a very simple bubble diagram of the programme, however, we realized that it is possible to imagine the four constituent programmatic elements as four equal floor areas - a sort of deliberate segregation of programme. Kitchen, bathroom, bedroom and living room, therefore, get 100 sf each - literally. From here, our design develops into a catalogue of 10' square boxes divided into four programmatic categories: available for consumers to pick and choose, string together, stack - do as they please.
